BIG019 | Junatime | Remember The Magic

$25.00

Artist: Junatime

Description: Junatime singer/songwriter, Heather Sommerhauser, has always been unrepentant in her love of ‘80s music in her own pastel synth-warmed, brightly wistful, melancholy pop. With a long-time dream to create the perfect nostalgic ‘80s inspired pop record, the only question was how!

So it came as an inspiring surprise that Chris Schlarb, owner and producer of Long Beach's Big Ego studios and maker of many excellent but hardly ‘80s-leaning records, asked her to collaborate. Working sessions together, the pair discovered a shared love of ‘80s sounds held in high regard, like Peter Gabriel's 'So', and Kate Bush's 'Hounds of Love'. Heather and Chris began the recording process in October 2019, when Heather went into the studio to perform a stripped-down version of the songs. “Remember the Magic” [which became the album’s title and lead track] was the tune that instantaneously sparked Chris to start imagining the potential of this record, and the attention to detail that it deserved.

The real magic, however, is in how 'Remember the Magic' shows Heather as a lyricist and songwriter capable of inspiring such a sprawling and cohesive album. This isn’t throwback referencing; its tapping into the same wishful, wistful sincerity of the best of the ‘80s, a time when shiny new gear made for sounds and songs that reflected and deflected the vulnerable energy and aesthetic chances its best artists took invigorating their work with bravely embraced contradictions of substance and style.

Sophisticated, soulful and spray-curled synth-pop. JUNATIME's Heather Sommerhauser is unabashedly in love with the '80s, but has a keen ear to what makes us nostalgic for that sound. I'm cheating here a bit because my copy of the record came with a cassette titled Alternate Airwaves, featuring an '80s mix of Kate Bush, Yes, Foreigner, XTC, Janet Jackson, Tears for Fears, Thomas Dolby, Prefab Sprout — a sonic palette for Sommerhauser and producer Chris Schlarb. With compressed and chorus-heavy guitar solos, outrageous saxophone and Yamaha DX7, there's a cosmopolitan glint to these glitter-bombed pop songs.” - Viking’s Choice

“There are terms like “stars align” or “synergy” which I feel explains how amazing this album is. To have so many musicians, who are so good at their craft, get together and make a masterpiece like this, it might happen once in a lifetime. When I listen to the album, I constantly think about how much fun and satisfaction it must of been recording this. Remember the Magic has a huge feel of nostalgia, like sometimes a sax solo will start and I feel like the 90s SNL intro just started, but also feels in present time and relatable. I will also say that “Take Time” is my new summer classic and I haven’t heard such an impeccable duet since “Time after Time” by Cyndi Lauper and the guy who sang the duet with Cyndi Lauper.” -5centences

“It is just so wonderfully 80s and nostalgic. Just tremendous. And her voice, lead singer heather Sommerhauser does this incredible vocal run on the title track, reminds me a little of Rocket Love by Stevie Wonder: this really choppy, like really long run and it is just completely breathtaking and I’m just completely in love with it. such a cool song and a great 80s nostalgic retro trip from an album, as well.” - Tastes Like Music
