Liner Notes:
'See You Through' is the new 4th studio album out on BIG EGO Records from my band mssv, the post-genre power trio of myself, Mike Baggetta, on guitars and singing, Stephen Hodges on drums and mike watt on bass and also some extra singing. We recorded this album at BIG EGO studio in Long Beach, CA with producer and label leader Chris Schlarb at the helm (like the previous 3 albums) during the break in our 69-show intercontinental tour a year ago in 2025. This set of brand new mssv songs were worked out by us on the road every night of tour, in our typical style, letting them evolve into their current and lasting state for you to hear and enjoy on this new full length album.
The music on 'See You Through' features 6 longer songs as we revel in exploring the psychedelic textural elements of the music in a new mssv way, and was heavily inspired by Curtis Mayfield, Alice Coltrane, Neil Young and a thorough consideration of our current age and dilemmas. Where our previous album, 'On And On', was a kind of fever dream song-cycle concept on the patterned and repetitive nature of life and all things in an unending and ever-expanding universe, 'See You Through’s music is much more comfortable lingering in the spaces without having to rush to the point. While mssv has never been shy to embrace using dynamics and other musical fundamentals in the extreme, 'See You Through' finds us investigating those subtle qualities more in depth. Like exploring one’s inner life at a pace different from, and yet in sync with, the passage of universal time, or enjoying an eternal drone just for its endless nature and revealing qualities.
Modern times and current affairs are rife with opportunity for songwriting (well, any time is really…), but I found the more interesting part of this opportunity to be finding ways to build joy and optimism into these new songs, alongside my wry sense of humor. In the almost-title-track of the album, See Through You, and in No Words (the musical arrangement of which came directly from a dream watt had on this tour in Iowa City), you might hear the brazenness of my opinions, but don’t miss the obvious joy I take in delivering them in my vocal style. Snarling them cagily in the former, while erotically whispering them in the latter. And while the hopefulness in the lyrics of Another and All things Come lend an auspicious view to humanity, the band always takes plenty comfort in musically revealing another side of the story throughout.
